I Love to Quilt!

Tasha’s Double Wedding Ring Baby Quilt

August 14, 2010

Hasn’t every quilter wanted to make a Double Wedding Ring quilt at some point in their quilting career? Me too! As I looked into doing just that, I found out why not every one finishes one – the traditional method (with lots of small pieces and curved piecing) is challenging and time consuming.

So, I decided to take a class boasting of an easier method. In this method, one sews the rings (in black in the quilt below) to fusible web, turns them, then fuses them onto the background (white). I made nine of blocks to make the small quilt below.  I made the quilt for the grandson of a family friend. The recipient, a little boy, has used the rings as a “highway” for his toy cars. He has graciously shared the quilt with his little sister, and will share it (in short time from now) with a future sibling!

Summary:

Inspiration: Double Wedding Ring quilts – always wanted to make one!

Pattern: Quiltsmart Double Wedding Ring Quilt pattern pack with printed interfacing (optional: Tim Holtz Special edition – a newer pattern with additional printed panels.)

Special Materials: Quiltsmart pre-printed fusible interfacing (for the rings), bobbin or hemostat for turning, wooden iron, steam iron, pressing sheet (optional).

Special Skills required: Use care when pressing the rings after they are sewn to the fusible interfacing.

Additional Resources: Multiple tutorials are available on You Tube. My favorite is Eleanor Burns of “Quilt in a Day” fame (“Egg Money Quilts”), as her sense of humor is carefree and fun.
