I Love to Quilt!

Purple Knitzvah Quilt

November 30, 2016.

In common usage, a mitzvah often means “a good deed”—as in “Do a mitzvah and help Mrs. Goldstein with her packages.” This usage is quite old—the Jerusalem Talmud commonly refers to any charitable act as “the mitzvah.”

So, can you call making and giving a quilt a mitzvah? I think so! Especially if the receiving party really needs the quilt, or needs the mental uplift that comes from realizing, “Hey, someone made this especially for me!”.

At our synagogue, the Women’s group has a quilting and knitting group (predominantly knitters), called the Knitzvah circle. (Cute play on words, right?) The mission of the Knitzvah circle is to take donated materials (yarn, fabric, sometimes batting) and make quilts or throws for congregants who are recovering from illness or injury; Also, we make baby blankets and knitted booties for new babies in our congregation. In either case, our clergy distribute these items.

Anyway, I’ve made a few quilts for the Knitzvah circle, and for other groups as well.  Check out the quilts in the “Mitzvah” menu for more details!

Carol from our Knitzvah Quilt group, did the top of this lovely quilt:
